What is the main cause of hair loss?
Hair loss (alopecia) is a condition that can affect both men and women. It is characterized by the loss of hair from the scalp or other parts of the body.
While there are many possible causes of hair loss, the most common cause is genetics. Other potential causes include certain medical conditions, hormonal imbalances, and some medications. However, in many cases, the exact cause of hair loss cannot be determined.
For those who are concerned about hair loss, it is important to consult with a medical professional. They will be able to perform a full evaluation of your medical history and make recommendations for treatment.
When should you seek professional help?
It is normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. But if you are losing more than that, it could be cause for concern. If you are concerned about your hair loss, there are a few key signs that indicate it is time to seek professional medical help.
- First, if you are experiencing sudden or dramatic hair loss, this may be a sign of a serious underlying condition.
- Second, if you are losing hair in patches or notice that your hair is thinning overall, this could also be a cause for concern.
- Third, if you have any other symptoms along with your hair loss, such as itching, redness, or inflammation, this could indicate an underlying skin condition.
- Finally, if you have tried over-the-counter treatments without success, it may be time to see a doctor.
If you are experiencing any of these signs, seeking professional medical help can ensure that you receive an accurate diagnosis and the best possible treatment.
What treatment options are there for hair loss?
There are a variety of treatment options available, and the best approach depends on the underlying cause of hair loss.
In some cases, simple changes to the diet or lifestyle may be enough to stop hair loss or promote new growth. For example, increasing the intake of protein and essential nutrients can help to improve hair health.
In other cases, more aggressive treatment may be necessary such as using medication or even hair transplant surgery. Ultimately, the best approach for each individual will depend on the cause of their hair loss and their own preferences.
Best hair loss treatment
There are currently 2 approved medications for the treatment of hair loss: finasteride and minoxidil.
Finasteride – Finasteride is a prescription hair loss medication used to treat male pattern baldness. It is a safe and effective treatment for hair loss and has been approved by the FDA for use in men. Finasteride works by inhibiting the production of DHT, a hormone that causes hair loss. In men, DHT is produced in the testicles, prostate, and scalp. By inhibiting the production of DHT, finasteride helps to prevent hair loss and promote hair regrowth. Finasteride is available in tablet form and is taken orally once a day.
Minoxidil – Minoxidil is a popular treatment for hair loss and it’s available both over the counter and by prescription. It was originally developed as a treatment for high blood pressure, but it was found to have the side effect of promoting hair growth. Minoxidil is thought to work by increasing blood flow and nutrients to the hair follicle, which prevents the follicle from miniaturizing. In other words, it helps to keep the follicle healthy and able to produce new hair. Minoxidil is available in both topical and oral forms, and it is typically used twice daily.
