Strattera
Strattera is the brand name of atomoxetine, an FDA-approved non-stimulant medication that doctors prescribe to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, otherwise known as ADHD. It is commonly given to both adults and children for the disorder. Unlike most other ADHD medications, Strattera is a non-stimulant.
The drug works similarly to SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), which are commonly used in the treatment of depression. Strattera was initially developed to treat the same mood disorders as SSRIs, but it proved to be ineffective — however, the drug turned out to be effective in the treatment of ADHD. It received FDA approval in 2003. Today, it holds a place in the “third line” of treatment options for ADHD as it only yields results in around a third of patients, and the effects last for a shorter amount of time than other ADHD medications. As such, a doctor will usually only write a Strattera prescription if the patient cannot take stimulant medication.
What is Strattera Prescribed For?
Doctors prescribe Strattera as part of an overall treatment plan for ADHD, a chronic condition that causes impulsive behavior, hyperactivity, and attention issues. The medication is often prescribed in conjunction with other treatment methods, including psychological and social treatments. Studies have shown that the medication can help to increase focus and concentration, pay attention, and reduce fidgety behavior. It is suitable for patients aged six and over.
How Does Strattera Work?
Strattera is an SNRI (Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor), a class of medication usually used in the treatment of depression. These types of medications affect how the brain interacts with and absorbs norepinephrine. It affects your overall mood and how your body functions. For people with ADHD, the effect may be:
- Reducing impulsive behavior
- Boosting the ability to pay attention and focus
- A reduction in hyperactivity
What Are The Side Effects of Strattera?
The majority of people that take Strattera do not experience severe side effects. In clinical trials for the medication, only a small percentage had to stop taking Strattera due to significant side effects.
Side effects can be different depending on the age of the patient.
In children, the most common side effects are:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Drowsiness
In adults, the most common side effects are:
- Insomnia
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Erectile dysfunction
More severe side effects are rare but can happen. These include allergic reactions, decreased growth in children, jaundice, and heart-related issues.

-
How do I get a prescription for Strattera?
You can get a prescription for Strattera by making an appointment with a healthcare professional. How to use Strattera?
You will take Strattera once or twice a day. Your dose will be determined by the doctor and may be adjusted after a few days. Doctors usually prescribe a low dose and work up until the ideal dose is found. Strattera capsules come in a variety of strengths, from 10mg up to 100mg dosages. You can take Strattera with or without food, but many people find that certain side effects, such as nausea, are less severe if they take it with a high-protein meal.
-
What to avoid while using Strattera?
You should tell your healthcare provider if you’re taking any other medications to ensure no dangerous interactions can occur. It’s generally recommended to avoid or limit the consumption of alcohol while taking Strattera, as it can decrease the effectiveness of the medication (by worsening your condition) and increase the likelihood of side effects such as sedation. It’s best to avoid breastfeeding, as it’s unknown whether human breast milk absorbs atomoxetine.
