Valacyclovir
Valacyclovir is an antiviral prescription medicine used to treat infections that have been caused by the herpes virus. They’re commonly given to people who have previously had conditions such as genital herpes, eye infections, and cold sores or who have a weak immune system. It is also used to treat chickenpox in children aged two to eighteen.
It is given to treat outbreaks of herpes virus conditions. People who have recurring outbreaks may take Valacyclovir to reduce the severity of future outbreaks. It is not a cure for viral infections but rather limits the capacity for a virus to develop, which helps to boost the recovery time from cold sores, decreases itching, and stops new symptoms from developing.
Part of the purine nucleoside analog drug class, it was first approved for use by the FDA in 1995 and is sold under the brand name Valtrex.
What is Valacyclovir Prescribed For?
The antiviral drug Valacyclovir is prescribed by licensed healthcare professionals to treat a wide range of conditions caused by certain types of viruses, most commonly the herpes virus. It is given to both adults and children.
In children, it is typically used to treat cold sores and chickenpox. In adults, it is used to treat genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles.
How Does valacyclovir Work?
Valacyclovir works by reducing the spread and growth of the virus within the body. It does not eliminate the virus from the body but rather limits the impact that it can have. It blocks enzymes within the virus which prevents it from building upon itself; in other words, it stops the virus from growing. The effect is that outbreaks and flare-ups are not as severe and last for shorter periods of time. It also makes it more difficult for the virus to spread from one host to another.
What Are The Side Effects of Valacyclovir?
Some people experience the side effects of taking Valacyclovir. However, most side effect symptoms are mild, and they only affect around one in ten people that take the medication. Even for people who do experience some side effects, the benefits of taking the drug typically outweigh the downsides.
Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Sensitive skin
In rare instances, more serious side effects may be experienced, especially among people who are sixty-five and older. These symptoms include:
- Unexpected bleeding
- Tiredness
- Fever and pale skin

How to take Valacyclovir?
How much Valacyclovir you will take will depend on why you’re taking the medication. A single dose typically ranges from 200 mg to 800 mg. You’ll take the medication multiple times a day; it could be as little as twice a day or as much as five. It’s best to space out your doses evenly throughout the day; for instance, if you take it three times a day, in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening.
How long you’ll take the medication will depend on what you’re treating. If it’s an acute viral infection, you’ll take Valacyclovir for around five to ten days. If it’s treating a chronic condition, you may take the drug permanently.
-
What to avoid while taking Valacyclovir?
Some medications can interact with Valacyclovir, so it’s best to tell the healthcare professional at the time of your appointment if you’re taking other medication. Medications that can interact with Valacyclovir include cimetidine, mycophenolate mofetil, probenecid, and aminophylline. If you’re taking the medication due to genital herpes, you should avoid sexual intercourse (or use a latex condom) to help prevent the spread of the virus to other people.
There are no known food or drink products that will inhibit the effectiveness of Valacyclovir, and it’s OK to drink alcohol while you’re taking the medication.
