Prozac (Fluoxetine)

The antidepressant drug Prozac (Fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, bulimia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, among others. It works by increasing the patient’s level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that modulates mood. Many people with depression have low levels of serotonin; Prozac helps to increase those levels.

It is touted as one of the most effective antidepressant drugs available because of its effectiveness and the relatively limited number of side effects. It was first authorized for use by the FDA in 1987, and while it was originally developed as a treatment for depression, today it’s used for a whole host of other mental conditions in addition to depression. It’s a prescription drug, which means it’s only available following a consultation with a healthcare professional. It is prescribed for both acute depressive disorders as well as a maintenance treatment.

What is Prozac Prescribed For?

Prozac was originally developed to combat depression, but today is approved for use in treating a wide range of mental health conditions. It is given to people experiencing major depressive disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia, panic disorders, and more. The medication aims to restore the patient “back to normal.”

In some cases, Prozac may be prescribed for other purposes, such as treating generalized anxiety disorder, body dysmorphia, or PTSD. The medication is not approved by the FDA for these conditions, but it can be prescribed by licensed medical professionals at their discretion.

How Does Prozac Work?

Prozac is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that improves the function of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that affects mood. The serotonin levels of people experiencing depression are too low because they are being absorbed by neurons in the brain. Prozac helps to prevent absorption, strengthening the communication between the brain cells. The effect is that there are higher levels of serotonin in the brain, which in turn boosts mood, energy, and overall outlook on life.

What Are The Side Effects of Prozac?

The majority of people do not experience side effects when taking Prozac. However, some people may find that they have mild symptoms, especially during the beginning of their treatment. Common side effects affect around one in a hundred people that take the medication. These side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Feeling tired
  • Headaches

Most of the symptoms of these side effects go away once the body gets used to the medication. In some cases, people experience long-term side effects. These can include a loss of libido. In extremely rare cases, Prozac can cause serotonin syndrome, a serious condition.

Frequently asked questions

  • Prozac is a FDA controlled substance that cannot be bought over the counter. You can get a Prozac prescription online by attending a consultation with one of the clinicians at DrHouse.

  • You will need a prescription to take Prozac. You can get a Prozac online prescription by setting up an appointment with one of the clinicians at DrHouse. This fully online service is available to members and non-members. If the healthcare professional determines that Prozac is suitable for you, a prescription will be sent to you, or you can pick it up at your preferred pharmacy.

  • Prozac comes in tablet form and is taken once a day. While there’s no specific time of day that you should take the medication, it’s generally best to take it at the same time each day in order to increase the effectiveness and reduce the chances of side effects. You can take Prozac with or without food.

If you accidentally miss a dose, you should just carry on the following day as normal. You should not double your intake in order to make up for the missed dose. Most people take Prozac for several months after they feel better.

  • It’s important to limit (or eliminate) consumption of alcohol when you’re taking antidepressant medication, as it can have an impact on the effectiveness of the medication. It can also make you sleepy, so at the very least, it’s best to avoid alcohol for the first few days of treatment until your body is used to it.

  • Most people take between 20mg and 80mg of Prozac. Most people start on a lower dose, though the dosage may increase over time, depending on the effectiveness of the treatment. People may take Prozac for many months, even years.

  • To get an online prescription for Prozac you will have to set up an account with us, download the DrHouse app and make an on-demand visit with one of our board-certified clinicians.

  • Our clinicians are able to prescribe up to a 90-day prescription for any previously prescribed medications, that are not classified as controlled substances. They use their medical judgment to determine whether to prescribe and the duration.

In certain cases, the prescription may be limited to 30 days. There also may be a 12-month cap for some prescriptions.  For medications requiring annual monitoring (such as blood work or imaging), the maximum prescription limit is 90 days within a year.
