Levocetirizine (Xyzal)
Xyzal, generic name levocetirizine, is an antihistamine. Like other drugs in this class, it reduces the proliferation of histamines, chemicals the immune system makes to remove substances it believes pose a threat. In most cases, histamines are helpful during infections or when you get a cut. They marshal the immune system and assist your body in repairing the damage. However, in other conditions such as allergies, histamines can build up to high levels, causing side effects.
With that said, levocetirizine cannot prevent severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis. Doctors usually recommend or prescribe it for mild conditions or as an adjunct therapy. Levocetirizine is not a substitute for regular epinephrine.
Most levocetirizine is sold over-the-counter in the U.S. Patients take it orally to self-treat conditions. Packaging contains instructions on the proper dosages and so on. However, doctors may prescribe some versions of the drug.
What is Levocetirizine Prescribed For?
Doctors prescribe levocetirizine for hay fever and skin hives.
Hay fever, also sometimes called allergic rhinitis, is a condition that gives people cold-like symptoms. While there is no infection, their immune system believes there is, confusing pollen in the air for dangerous pathogenic invaders.
Hives refer to itchy patches on the skin. Like hay fever, it is an allergic reaction to a perceived threat.
Levocetirizine blocks the chemicals in the immune system that cause unwanted symptoms, such as a runny nose, sore eyes, and red marks on the skin.
Manufacturers sell different types of levocetirizine depending on the age of the patient. Products are available for children and adults and usually provide relief for up to 24 hours.
How Does Levocetirizine Work?
Levocetirizine works by preventing the immune system from releasing proinflammatory histamines. When cells can no longer release these substances, it prevents the cascading immune system effects that can lead to itchy, red, and watery eyes, a runny nose, and discomfort caused by hives.
Levocetirizine works in a similar way to other antihistamine drugs. However, patients should never take it with other antihistamines, such as loratadine or fexofenadine. Doing so may lead to an overdose.
Doctors often vary the dose according to the severity of the symptoms. For instance, those with more severe hay fever may need to take higher amounts.
What Are The Side Effects of Levocetirizine?
Like other antihistamines, levocetirizine has some potential side effects, which vary considerably by age. Fortunately, most side effects are not severe.
In people over age 12, side effects can include sore throat, redness, inflammation of the nose and throat, dry mouth, and tiredness.
The most common side effects in younger children aged 6 to 11 are drowsiness, nose bleeds, fever, and cough.
Common side effects in children aged 1 to 5 include diarrhea, vomiting, ear infections, and fever. Gastrointestinal side effects are common in babies over the age of 6 months.
Always consult with your physician or other qualified health providers about medical concerns. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking it based on what you read on this website.
If you are experiencing high fever (>103F/39.4C), shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chest pain, heart palpitations, abnormal bruising, abnormal bleeding, extreme fatigue, dizziness, new weakness or paralysis, difficulty with speech, confusion, extreme pain in any body part, or inability to remain hydrated or keep down fluids or feel you may have any other life-threatening condition, please go to the emergency department or call 911 immediately.
Frequently asked questions
-
Can you get Levocetirizine over the counter?
Yes, some types of levocetirizine are available over the counter from most pharmacies. However, other types require a prescription. Most pharmacies sell Children’s Xyzal® Allergy 24HR and Xyzal® Allergy 24HR.
-
How do I get a prescription for Levocetirizine?
Regular Xyzal® requires a prescription from your doctor. If you want to take this medication, you will need to have a consultation with your physician. They will assess your condition and determine whether it warrants taking the drug.
-
Can you get a Levocetirizine prescription online?
If you need a levocetirizine prescription, you can get one online. Online doctors have the same capacity to prescribe drugs as their in-office counterparts.
-
How to use Levocetirizine?
If you decide to take levocetirizine, you need to weigh the potential side effects against the good it will do. Before taking the drug, tell your doctor if you have had any allergic reactions to other drugs in the past. Also, let them know if you have sensitivities to dyes, preservatives, or animals.
There are two main ways to use levocetirizine, either in pill or liquid form. Patients usually take one tablet daily in the evening, not necessarily with food. Take tablets every day at the same time.
-
What to avoid while using Levocetirizine?
If you are taking levocetirizine, you should avoid taking other medications that affect the central nervous system as these may worsen side effects, such as poor concentration or drowsiness. You should not combine it with any other antihistamines as this may lead to an overdose. You should not drink alcohol while using antihistamines.
-
Is it legal to prescribe Levocetirizine online?
Yes, DrHouse has developed a telemedicine platform that enables our providers to practice medicine and take care of patients remotely. Every medical professional you interact with has been licensed by their respective state to prescribe medications and treat patients.
-
What is DrHouse's prescription refill policy?
Our clinicians are able to prescribe up to a 90-day prescription for any previously prescribed medications, that are not classified as controlled substances. They use their medical judgment to determine whether to prescribe and the duration.
In certain cases, the prescription may be limited to 30 days. There also may be a 12-month cap for some prescriptions. For medications requiring annual monitoring (such as blood work or imaging), the maximum prescription limit is 90 days within a year.
