Alprostadil (Caverject, Muse)
Alprostadil is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and to help diagnose certain conditions that affect blood flow to the penis. It can also be used to improve blood flow in newborn babies with heart problems (in clinical settings).
For treating erectile dysfunction, alprostadil is available in the US in two forms:
- Injectable solution (Caverject, Edex): The medication is injected directly into the corpus cavernosum of the penis. It’s one of the more common forms and is known for its rapid onset of action.
- Urethral suppository (Muse): It involves placing a tiny suppository containing alprostadil inside the urethra.
It works by widening blood vessels and boosting blood flow to the penis, it helps achieve and maintain an erection. alprostadil is unique because it’s effective for men who may not respond to other ED medications.
For injectable solution, the medication is injected directly into the penis using a small needle or an automatic injector device. It should be administered 5-20 minutes before sexual activity and should not be used more than once in 24 hours. Do not use more than 3 injections per week.
For urethral suppository, the medication is placed in the opening of the penis using a disposable applicator. It should be used 10 minutes before sexual activity and should not be used more than twice per week.
You should follow your doctor’s instructions carefully when using Alprostadil.
In the United States, alprostadil is available under the following brand names:
- Caverject
- Caverject Impulse
- Edex
- Muse
Common side effects associated with alprostadil may include:
