Cefadroxil (Duricef)

Cefadroxil is an antibiotic medication that is used to treat certain bacterial infections. It belongs to the class of medications known as cephalosporins, which are a class of β-lactam antibiotics.

The mechanism of action of cefadroxil involves disrupting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It achieves this by binding to specific proteins within the bacterial cell, inhibiting the process that forms the cell wall. This disruption leads to the weakening and eventual death of the bacterial cells.

Cefadroxil is considered a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which means it is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.  Although as a first-generation cephalosporin, it is primarily used to treat infections caused by gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species, it also has some activity against certain gram-negative bacteria.

Some examples of bacterial infections that cefadroxil can be used to treat include skin and soft tissue infections, strep throat or tonsilitis, and urinary tract infections.

Cefadroxil comes in the form of oral tablets (1000mg), capsules (500mg), and suspension (250 mg/5 mL; 500 mg/5 mL).

In the United States, cefadroxil is available under the following brand names:

  • Duricef

Common side effects associated with cefadroxil may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Vaginal itching and/or abnormal discharge

More serious side effects which should be reported to your healthcare provider immediately may include:

  • Severe stomach pain or cramps
  • Watery or bloody stools
  • Weakness or confusion
  • Dark colored urine
  • Jaundice
  • Swelling of feet or lower legs
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Pale skin, easy bruising, or unusual bleeding
  • Signs of a new infection such as sore throat, chills, or a fever

The above lists of possible side effects associated with cefadroxil are not exhaustive and other side effects may occur. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects while taking cefadroxil, it is important to contact your healthcare provider right away.

If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat while taking cefadroxil, seek immediate medical attention.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cefadroxil

What Is Cefadroxil Used to Treat?

Cefadroxil is used to treat various bacterial infections. Cefadroxil is commonly used as an alternative agent if a patient is allergic to penicillin or if the infection is caused by bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. Some of the common infections treated with cefadroxil include:

Some specific examples include:

  • Skin and soft tissue infections such as impetigo, cellulitis, and infected wounds
  • Strep throat or tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as cystitis and pyelonephritis

These are just a few examples, cefadroxil may also be prescribed for other types of bacterial infections.

What Are the Most Common Side Effects of Cefadroxil?

Just like with many other antibiotics, cefadroxil may cause different gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain.

The symptoms are usually mild and can be managed by taking the medication with food. Additionally, it is important to stay hydrated when experiencing diarrhea or vomiting.

In case these persist or become severe, it is important to consult your healthcare provider for further advice.

For women, cefadroxil may also cause vaginal itching or other signs of a yeast infection. If this occurs, it is recommended to consult your healthcare provider for proper treatment.

What Is the Typical Starting Dose of Cefadroxil?

The dosage of cefadroxil will vary depending on the type and severity of the infection being treated. When it comes to antibiotics such as cefadroxil, there is no one-size-fits-all approach and your healthcare provider will base the dosage and the duration of treatment on your individual needs and the specific bacteria causing the infection.

Generally for most bacterial infections that are treated with cefadroxil, the usual starting dose is 1 gram taken once a day or divided into two doses of 500 mg every 12 hours.  And the duration can be anywhere from 5 days to 14.

Some more specific dosing examples include:

  • For skin and soft tissue infections, the typical dose is 500 mg taken once a day for 4 to 14 days.
  • For Streptococcal pharyngitis, the usual dose is 1 g taken once a day for 10 days.
  • For uncomplicated urinary tract infections, the usual dose would be 500mg twice daily for 5 to 7 days.

But it’s important to remember that the exact dosage depends on many factors and your healthcare provider may adjust the dose and duration based on your individual response to treatment. Always follow your prescribed dosage and talk to your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.

How to Take Cefadroxil?

Cefadroxil is typically taken orally, with or without food. If you experience an upset stomach, taking the medication with food can help alleviate this symptom.

It is important to complete the full course of treatment even if you start feeling better. Stopping the medication too soon may result in a relapse or cause the bacteria to become resistant to cefadroxil and other antibiotics.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and read the medication guide carefully for proper usage and storage instructions.

Can Cefadroxil Be Taken During Pregnancy or While Breastfeeding?

It is important to consult your healthcare provider before taking cefadroxil if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. While there is limited data on the safety of cefadroxil in pregnancy, it is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy when the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks.

Cefadroxil can also pass into breast milk. It can generally be considered safe for use while breastfeeding, as its relative infant dose (RID) is only 2.6%. This falls well below the 10% threshold that is typically used to determine the safety of a medication during breastfeeding.

However, it’s crucial to remember that individual circumstances vary, and the decision to use any medication while breastfeeding should always be made in consultation with a healthcare provider. They will take into account the specific health needs of both the mother and the infant, ensuring a balance between the mother’s health requirements and the safety of the baby.

Do You Need a Prescription for Cefadroxil?
