Vardenafil (Levitra)
Vardenafil, commonly known as Levitra, is part of a class of medicines known as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors which relaxes the muscles found in the walls of blood vessels and works to increase blood flow to particular areas of the body.
It is commonly used to treat male sexual function problems such as erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence. Used in combination with sexual stimulation, Levitra works to increase the blood flow to the penis to help a man get and maintain an erection.
What is Levitra Prescribed For?
Levitra contains Vardenafil which is a member of the class of medicines known as the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors to treat ED and impotence in adult men, which are conditions with difficulties getting or maintaining an erection.
At least 1 in 10 men have trouble getting or keeping an erection, either due to physical issues, psychological causes, or a combination of the two. Levitra is prescribed by reducing the action of the natural chemical in the body that removes erections, allowing the penis to engage in sexual activity.
How Does Levitra Work?
Physical erections start to happen when the nerves in the penis are stimulated by touch. This stimulation causes nitric oxide to be released and generates substances to relax the muscles to allow blood to flow into the area known as the corpora cavernosa.
When people experience impotence or erectile dysfunction, the nerves do not relay the signals between the brain and the penis that allow the nitric oxide to be released and the muscles to relax, stopping blood flow into that area.
It also happens due to nitric oxide being broken down by the PDE5 enzymes, which makes it more difficult for the muscles in the penis area to relax. Levitra or Vardenafil works by breaking down the substances that are produced by nitric oxide, allowing the muscles to relax and blood to flow more easily into the tissues.
What Are The Side Effects of Levitra?
There are common side effects of using Levitra, including the following:
- Headache
- Indigestion
- Flushing
- Dizziness
- Blocked or runny nose
There are other less common side effects, including the following:
- Breathlessness
- Back or muscle pain
- Fast heartbeat
- Effects on vision
- Impaired perception of touch or numbness
- Swelling in the face, lips, throat, or mucous tissue
Additionally, there are rarer symptoms that could affect up to 1 in 1000 users, such as:
- Seizures
- High or low blood pressure
- Chest pain
- Anxiety
- Allergic reactions
If you are experiencing any of the following, it’s essential to get emergency medical help right away:
- Prolonged erections lasting 4 hours or more, which can damage the penis
- Sudden vision loss or vision changes
- Heart attack symptoms, such as pressure or pain in the chest which can spread to your jaw or shoulder, sweating, or nausea
