Ozempic (also known as Semaglutide) is in a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It is used to provide powerful A1C reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes.
The medicine acts in the same way as the hormone in the body that helps to control insulin levels, blood sugar, and digestion. When prescribed, Ozempic is given as a pre-filled, disposable, single-use injection pen that helps adults with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels. It is usually prescribed to patients after other diabetes medicines have proven unsuccessful.
What is Ozempic Prescribed For?
Ozempic is primarily prescribed to adults who have type 2 diabetes.
It should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise to help reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as a heart attack or a stroke, that are common to people with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease.
Ozempic can be used in addition to other diabetes medications, such as insulin and metformin.
Ozempic can also be used for weight loss as it mimics a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and plays a role in digestion, causing the user to feel full so that they reduce their calorie intake. Please note: the drug is not to be used solely for weight loss. It is primarily intended for use by adults with type-2 diabetes who would benefit from losing weight.
The drug isn’t intended for use by adults with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis and it isn’t prescribed to people who have previously suffered from pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
How Does Ozempic Work?
Ozempic helps to lower blood sugar levels and reduce A1C. To lower blood sugar levels, Ozempic works in 3 ways.
– Ozempic helps the pancreas produce more insulin when blood sugar levels are high
– Ozempic prevents the liver from making and releasing large quantities of sugar
– Ozempic slows down the food that is leaving the stomach to prevent the possibility of blood sugar spikes
What Are The Side Effects of Ozempic?
Common side effects of Ozempic include:
Nausea; Diarrhea; Stomach Pain; Constipation; Vomiting
Ozempic may also cause more serious side effects, such as thyroid tumors which may or may not be indicative of thyroid cancer. You should speak to your health care provider if you get a swelling in your neck, become hoarse, have trouble swallowing, or experience shortness of breath, as these are all symptoms of thyroid cancer.
Other serious side effects may include:
Inflammation of the pancreas; Changes in vision; Low blood sugar levels; Kidney failure; Allergic reactions; Gallbladder problems
Before taking Ozempic, you should speak to your healthcare provider to make sure the medication is safe for you.

How to take Ozempic?
You should take Ozemopic exactly as it has been prescribed by your doctor. When taking the medication, be sure to follow all of the directions on the prescription label and read any accompanying instruction sheets.
You will usually be prescribed Ozempic at a low dose to begin with. This will gradually increase every 4 weeks to 30 days.
Ozempic needs to be injected under the skin, once a week and at any time during the day. You should use Ozempic on the same day each week.
The injection should only be prepared when you are ready to use it. Your healthcare provider will show you where to inject the medicine and they will advise you not to inject it into the same place two times in a row.
What to avoid while taking Ozempic?
You should avoid sharing the injection pen, even if you have changed the needle, as it can increase the risk of a passed-on infection or disease.
Some foods can make the side effects of Ozempic worse, such as those that are high in fat and sugar. As these types of foods can also raise your blood sugar levels, they are best avoided. Alcoholic beverages can also raise your blood sugar levels and increase the risk of side effects, so these should be avoided when possible.
How long does a prescription of Ozempic last?
Ozempic pens come in 3 sizes and they hold 4 doses of either 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg or 2 mg that will last for one month. Higher doses can also be recommended when needed.
