Pilocarpine ophthalmic, commonly known as Vuity, is a treatment for a number of age-related progressive conditions associated with the eye, such as glaucoma or pressure inside the eye (known as ocular hypertension).
Vuity is a prescription eye drop that can help people experiencing the above problems and is used to treat age-related blurry vision, also known as presbyopia, in adults, which can help the eyes’ ability to focus on nearsighted objects.
What is Vuity Prescribed For?
Vuity is prescribed for people who are experiencing eye-related conditions, such as ocular hypertension (pressure inside the eye) or glaucoma, which is an eye condition where the optic nerve becomes damaged.
Vuity is an eyedrop-based solution prescribed to treat common progressive conditions associated with the human eye which reduces people’s ability to focus on objects near to them. Commonly known as presbyopia, the gradual loss of your eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects can start to become noticeable in your early to mid-40s and can deteriorate up until the age of approximately 65.
Vuity is an eye drop that provides relief from presbyopia, reduces reliance on reading glasses, and doesn’t interfere with an individual’s ability to use contact lenses.
How Does Vuity Work?
Vuity is known as a miotic drop which causes a pinhole effect on the eye, making the pupil contract. This mimics the eyes’ natural ability to focus, which will allow for a greater field of vision.
The active ingredient in Vuity is pilocarpine HCl ophthalmic solution 1.25%, which is known as a muscarinic receptor agonist, and pilocarpine is used in a number of eye treatments by specialists, such as constricting pupils following dilation, treating aqueous deficient dry eye (where your eyes cannot produce enough tears), and to lower intraocular pressure inside the eye, which can prevent ocular hypertension and support the shape of the eye.
What Are The Side Effects of Vuity?
Before taking Vuity, you should notify your doctor if you have had any of the following conditions:
- A detached retina
- Iritis, which is a swelling and irritation in the colored ring around the pupil
- Uveitis, which is inflammation of the middle layer of the eye known as the uvea or uveal tract
Some side effects of Vuity could include the following:
- Temporary blurred vision
- Temporary irritation of the eye
- Poor vision in dim light
Vuity, in rare cases, can cause allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should get medical attention:
- Increased watering or eye pain
- Signs of an eye infection, such as severe discomfort, drainage, crusting, or redness
- Severe swelling, burning or stinging in the eye

How to use Vuity?
Vuity is prescribed in eye drop form. Use the medication in the affected eye as directed by the medical professional once a day. When applying your eye drops, avoid contamination by washing your hands and not letting the dropper touch your eyes or any other surface. When administering, tilt your head back, look upwards, and pull down the lower eyelid to make a “pouch.”
Place one drop into the pouch, and after administering, close your eyes, look downwards, and put one finger at the corner of your eye, applying gentle pressure for a minute or two before reopening your eyes (this prevents the medication from leaking out). You should not stop or change the dosage of this medicine without your doctor’s approval.
What to avoid while using Vuity?
There are no known interactions between other drugs and Vuity but immediately after applying Vuity, you may experience temporary blurred vision. You should not drive at night, use machinery, or perform any activity that requires clear vision until you are certain you can perform these safely.
What is DrHouse's prescription refill policy?
Our clinicians are able to prescribe up to a 90-day prescription for any previously prescribed medications that are not classified as controlled substances. They use their medical judgement to determine whether to prescribe and the duration. They will have the prescription sent to the pharmacy of your choice.
